Hormone Replacement Therapy

RELIEVE THE SYMPTOMS OF MENOPAUSE

Hormone replacement therapy is used to help balance estrogen and progesterone in women around the time of menopause. Also known as hormone therapy (HT) or menopausal hormone therapy (MHT), hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can help relieve sweating, hot flashes, and other symptoms of menopause. It can also reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

Some types of HRT contain both progesterone and estrogen, some only estrogen, and sometimes testosterone is used.

SOME KEY POINTS ABOUT HRT

  • Hormone replacement therapy is an effective way to relieve symptoms of perimenopause and menopause.
  • Reduces the number and severity of hot flashes—and the risk of osteoporosis.
  • Studies have suggested a link with cancer, but this is still being investigated.
  • It may help keep skin looking younger, but it won't reverse the overall effects of aging.

Hormone therapy is an acceptable option for the relatively young (up to age 59 or within 10 years of menopause) and healthy women. Individualizing your hormone therapy is a key to its success. Personal risk factors such as age, time since menopause, and your risk of blood clots, heart disease, stroke, and breast cancer are all considered when tailoring a treatment plan.
