Postpartum Care

WHILE YOU ARE HEALING

The postpartum period refers to the first six weeks after childbirth. This is a joyous time, but it's also a period of adjustment and healing for mothers. This is a bonding period with your baby and you'll have a post-delivery checkup with our office. It is important to remember to give yourself time to adapt to a new normal.

Every recovery is different. Consult Dr. Ginsburg about what is best for you.

Some things to consider to help your recovery.

  • Get plenty of rest. You need it!
  • Seek help. Family, friends, you name it.
  • Eat healthy meals. It speeds up the healing process.
  • Exercise. Even walking and a change of scenery can be helpful.

POSTPARTUM BLEEDING, DISCHARGE AND CRAMPING

(This trifecta is unavoidable—even after a C-section.)

Starting right after delivery, your body will begin to shed blood and parts of the uterine lining. The bleeding and discharge are heaviest in the first few days following birth and can last 5-10 days with light discharge or spotting continuing for 4-6 weeks. (Discharge is typically lighter with C-sections). Check with Dr. Ginsburg if the bleeding has not substantially reduced after a few days.

You can also expect abdominal cramping (similar to period cramps) or mild contractions as your now baby-free uterus shrinks back to normal size.
